One step at a time

I’ve noticed a theme lately. As I talk with people every week, it seems oftentimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to have total clarity and have everything perfect before we move forward.

This can keep us stuck.

To quote Martin Luther King, Jr.:

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."

The truth is we don’t know how everything is going to turn out. When we wait to take action in exchange for knowing everything, we can feel stagnant. And it is hard to gain clarity when we are so “in our heads” thinking about it all the time.

We have to keep in mind how we feel, and how we want to feel. Then take one step at a time to move forward.

Take each step as it feels right, then another, then another.

So I've seen it over and over: Clarity can come when we take action instead of only thinking about it or having to know the bigger outcome before starting.

I once saw author Elizabeth Gilbert speak and she mentioned this same concept. She said that there were times in her life when she didn't know what she wanted to do next. She felt as if she didn't have any ideas -- in particular what to write about next or what project she wanted to take on next. She gave the example of a time several years ago when the only thing she felt any interest in at all was gardening. It felt right to simply garden, without any particular plans to do anything with it or to write about it. After a while, one thing led to another, which led to another, and after a couple years or so she wrote her next book, which is a novel about a botanist.

You never know. :)

So how about you? What is ONE step that you can take that feels right in order to move forward with something?
